TREVARNO GARDENS
INVESTING IN THE ENVIRONMENT

It is the policy of Trevarno Gardens and Estates to support and enhance the biodiversity in the landscape in which we work for the benefit of future generations. It is the policy of the business that we should adopt management principles so as to become more environmentally responsible by reducing our carbon footprint. By responsible management of our resources and by involving our visitors we hope to become more socially responsible.

What we are doing

We are working with the Green Tourism Business Scheme and COAST (Cornwall Sustainable Tourism Project) who are able to provide us with training and expert guidance. By sustainable we mean that Trevarno works to ensure that the environment that we enjoy today is managed and protected so that future generations may enjoy that same environment.

We have appointed Richard Cox, General Manager, to be responsible for our programme of environmental improvement. A team of staff members are working together to continually improve our environmental impact. All staff are involved in our commitment.

We are committed to the care of the environment and have undertaken the following actions in the operation of our business:-
  • We have switched all of the light bulbs that are suitable for changing to low energy
  • We have checked our heating thermostats to ensure that they are not set too high
  • We use environmentally friendly cleaning products and recycled paper products
  • Within skincare we use organic ingredients from sustainable sources
  • In the garden we use organic fertilizers where practicable
  • All woodchip mulches used in the garden are either from the estate or from local companies
  • We purchase locally wherever we can so as to reduce transport miles and support our local community
  • We recycle glass, plastic bottles, paper and cardboard and compost our kitchen waste
  • We have maps to encourage walking
  • Our staff car share where possible
We are working with our staff, Green Business Tourism Scheme and COAST on the next steps to further reduce our impact on the environment. We are corporate members of Cornwall Wildlife Trust.

How we are working with our natural environmental

Throughout the garden and estate we have a variety of environments.

The RSPB have carried out a survey of the bird life on the estate. The survey showed that the estate provides for species which are considered to be of high conservation concern such as Song Thrush, Linnet, Skylark and Bullfinch. On the estate we have had kingfisher, red kite and lesser spotted woodpecker.

Around the estate buildings and woods we have a rich variety of bats in roosts. In the early evening some varieties can be seen and heard hawking over the lake.

On the estate we have found evidence of otter in the mill pond and lake, badgers have established setts throughout the estate and we have rich populations of small mammals.
Throughout the garden we are now stacking logs and make brash piles so that small mammals, birds and invertebrates have a greater choice to establish and grow.

How we would like you to help

We encourage our visitors to consider the importance of improving and protecting the Cornish environment for future generations and invite you to make suggestions about how we might improve our environmental performance.
  • Please ensure that you recycle all that you can.
  • Please have a nut seed cake as for each one purchased we donate 5p to Cornwall Wildlife Trust to support their works.
  • Please try and plan your trips to combine locations and so reduce miles travelled. If possible consider using public transport, bicycle or walking.
We regret, that like all other attractions, we need to produce literature as this is the way that the majority of visitors discover us.

We are sure that you will come across many leaflets and we respectively ask that they are recycled.

We hope that you enjoy Trevarno and we welcome your comments.

Thank you.
